NAME: Beatrice

CANON: Umineko no Naku Koroni
NAME: Beatrice
AGE: 19
CANON: Umineko no Naku Koroni
CANON HISTORY:
http://umineko.wikia.com/wiki/Sayo_Yasuda On Yasuda / her true form
http://umineko.wikia.com/wiki/Beatrice On Beatrice
CANON PERSONALITY: ”......I certainly will not separate myself from the detestable image of a witch that you hold. However, I show good will to those who respect me. Aren't humans the same? Although I doubt there is a human who would repay your squaring off at them with good will, right?"
The first impression that most characters have of Beatrice is cruel. Cruel, unusual, temperamental, cold, and yet, high spirited. She seems to be without mercy for those who disrespect her--manipulating others in order to get what she wants. After all, in canon, she had used Shannon’s love for another in order to regain her power, and then finish a ceremony.
Not only does she seem to be manipulative, but she will not hesitate to use others for her own amusement--reducing men into nothing more than mere servants and shaming them to the point where they lose any will to fight back in order to show off her victory against them in a game.
Her speech pattern is odd--she speaks harshly, and in riddles more often than even that. However, at the same time, she speaks in an optimistic manner, whether she is insulting them or not.
However, this is only the outer shell of Beatrice. If we were to talk about fairy tales, Beatrice would certainly fit in with other cruel witches that we have come to know within those tales. Though, one of Beatrice’s goal is to be acknowledged as a witch.
And so, she will act as a cruel witch in order to be acknowledged as one.
This isn’t to say that her cruelty can indeed be part of her nature. But, it isn’t because she’s evil. Although she claims to be one of the cruelest witches in existence, and can be terrifying towards others when she wishes to be, there is much more to her than just that cruelty. Beatrice is a mystery altogether. The Golden Witch is indeed the key to understanding Umineko no Naku Koro ni. And for that reason, understanding her story may be a way in understanding those layers that Ryukishi has given to her.
"Fuffufufufufufu, *cackle*! Furniture is a thoroughly pitiful existence. So you have no dreams, no future, and even no love? Good, good, there is nothing better than knowing your place. *cackle*cackle*!"
Beatrice is a witch, in the beginning, that scoffs and laughs at love--often tearing lovers apart for what she claims to be her own amusement. However, Beatrice herself is a witch that believes that she can never be loved. As the one who waits for a promise in place of the other servant, Shannon, she is chained to one place until the person she was born for returns to her. However, by the time that Battler returns to Rokkenjima, he has forgotten his promise to her. As someone who waited and waited for a promise that could perhaps never be fulfilled, she has come to believe that she can never be loved. Her human half is said to have a body that can never be loved, and because of that, she believes that she is nothing more than furniture. Furniture is someone who does not have a complete soul--someone who has never had the chance, or will have the chance to love while they are not within Beatrice’s Golden Land.
The Golden Land is a place where magic can be used freely. In Shannon's words: it's a world where no one is ever lonely, furniture are no longer furniture, and any miracle that a person wants can be granted. It's a beautiful place that only those invited by Beatrice herself can enter.
Beatrice is a witch that specializes in Western magic. As alchemist of the Ushiromiya family, Beatrice can create any amount of gold as she pleases.
As an Endless Witch, however--her abilities are far more dangerous.
"......I have been told not to break vases. ...But that's why I wanted to break them. .........Then I gained the Endless Magic. ...When I knew that I could fix it back to normal no matter how badly I broke it, ......I was surprised at how fun it was to break a vase..."
As an Endless Witch, Beatrice can break an object, only to repair it as many times as she wishes. While Virgilia, her teacher, had first taught her the art of Endless Magic in order to help Beatrice bring happiness to herself and others, Beatrice began to misuse these powers. If a child can break a toy over and over again, only to fix it after, than shouldn't it be fine? And what about human lives? Isn't it fine to break them as much as one desires, if you can fix them right after?
Though, this is also part of Beatrice's development. After laughing at the acts of cruelty that Eva-BEATRICE had committed against Rosa Ushiromiya and Maria Ushiromiya, she slowly began to learn that human lives do hold value to them. That, even though they can be broken easily, fixing them can prove to be far more difficult.
"I don't need this mountain of gold. I don't need money. I don't need the headship of the Ushiromiya family. I just... want him to come back... And so, all I wish for is to continue to wait here."
Although Beatrice was originally 'born' from Yasuda--a servant of the Ushiromiya family--eventually, her life begins to have much more meaning than being the ghost of Rokkenjima's night. As said earlier, Beatrice's purpose is one that is not revealed until later on in the Core arcs. Her goals are connected with Battler Ushiromiya.
After waiting, and waiting for him to fulfill his promise (that very promise to be to take her away on a white horse), only to find out that they could not keep it in the end--it may have only made sense that Shannon exchanged her love--that very burden of pain onto someone else in order to move on. And so, Beatrice's appearance changed and took form to be a woman that Battler would love and desire. Although the chance of being loved by him was extremely small, Beatrice wanted nothing more than to love him--for Battler to remember that very promise. To be acknowledged by him, and even the rest of the Ushiromiya family. In fact, it isn't even an exaggeration to say that Beatrice's existence revolves around Battler himself. Her final form was created for him, after all.
In the end, when Battler shows that he cannot remember his promise, she eventually gives up everything, and surrenders in a fight against him--allowing herself to lose. In other words, it's an attempted suicide. And in the end, she becomes nothing more than a living corpse, waiting for Battler to fulfill his last promise to kill her.
However, there's still much more to Beatrice than just that much. Although Beatrice is only 19, she believes that she is the manifestation of all the Beatrice's that have resided within Rokkenjima. Beatirce believes herself to be Beatrice Castoliongi, Beatrice II, and Yasuda. Because of that, she often makes comments referring to what she considers her first and second life, though never revealing anything about her third. Exposing her heart further would expose herself as an illusion.
If we were to summarize Beatrice passed the more tragic side of her, and the more devious aspect that she tends to show, we could describe her in a few words. She's charismatic, childish, high spirited, optimistic, and naive. Although she does appear to be knowledgeable of many things, Beatrice has never once set foot outside of Rokkenjima, and has yet to see the outside world. The only way that she's been able to travel is through books. And even then, her naivety shows in other ways. Only giving things during Valentine's Day to expect something in return for White Day.
She is prone to throwing tantrums and taking her anger out through violent means if she doesn't get her way. In some ways, she's nothing more than a bully--showing that she enjoys feeling like she has power over others. Some of her "furniture" look identical to the servants who had bullied her human side in the home that she had grown up in--Beatrice often abusing said furniture if they do not do as she asks, or upset her.
She also has quite the habit of being nosy and pushing her nose into other people's business. In her words, there is nothing more sweet than another person's love life. If there's anything a witch hates, it's boredom. So, why not find a way to entertain herself when speaking with others? She is, after all, a prankster. One who is fond of tricks and surprises. Teasing and making others fluster to her is a treat in itself.
Though, there is still that kind side of her. Beatrice shows softness to those she's fond of. And despite the fact that she had waited so long for one person, she forgave them completely--finally marrying him at the end of the Sixth Episode. She even forgave Natsuhi Ushiromiya for tossing her from a cliff when she was nothing more than an infant. That single sin that Natsuhi had committed had been enough to make the wheels of fate turn, and give her the tragic life that she has had.
Though, without understanding Beatrice, it may be difficult to understand why a few characters--Will, Lion, and Battler have come to respect her so greatly, despite the crimes that she has committed. Of course, understanding her motives and personality beyond that cruelty may be the key for that much.
The line without anger, without sadness, without love--the truth cannot be seen is something said in Umineko often.
And certainly, this line follows not only believing in magic in Uminekoverse, but understanding Beatrice's heart, and solving Umineko's mystery altogether
SKILLS/ABILITIES: In Uminekoverse, magic depends on belief. The more humans believe in magic, the more powerful a witch can become. However, when around too many humans that do not believe, Beatrice’s very form is in danger of disappearing. Disbelief and denial of magic is one of a witch’s greatest enemies.
Endless Magic: Beatrice is an Endless With. She can repair things that are broken or dead as much as she pleases, over and over again. Of course, it is far more difficult to revive a human, but it isn’t impossible to do so.
Alchemy: As the Golden Witch, Beatrice can use alchemy to create as much gold as she wants.
Summoning: Beatrice can summon many different furniture--from the Seven Sisters of Purgatory to simple Goat-like butlers, to powerful demons from Hell. When her magic is weakened, she is limited to what she can summon.
Transportation: She can go from place to place--disappearing in her trademark sign. That is a golden butterfly.
Red text: Anything that is spoken in red is the truth. When she uses this magic, the area around her turns into a red, crimson color as she speaks. However, red truth is not absolute, and can be easily twisted. Though, red truth cannot be used if the statement is a lie, and can hurt the person using it if used wrongly. Again, red truth can be twisted easily. I.e; a key might have existed before, but disappeared. The one wielding that very magic can say ‘there is no key’ when there was one to begin with. Only witches are permitted to use this magic, and create red truths with it. The non-witches in the series only use what red they have been given to by a witch.
Blue text: This is a text that can be quite dangerous to a witch if used correctly. Instead of merely saying the truth as the red can, this text is used to theorize against other witches. As said earlier, disbelief can be a witch’s greatest enemy. Therefore, using this can be enough to almost kill a witch--as shown in Episode 4. i.e; “He could have just walked into the room, he didn’t need magic.”
Gold text: This truth is 100% absolute. There is no way to fight against it, nor is there a way to use it unless it is indeed the truth. However, this can only be used by those who understand a gameboard completely.
Simple magic: To make candy fall from the sky--or make a single rose petal appear in a cup. To make tea appear out of no where. Beatrice’s magic is indeed unlimited, however it has many weaknesses to it, as well. She can still be easily killed, despite what she says.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Beatrice Ushiromiya (Or Beato as a nickname she prefers).
AU AGE: 16
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: I’d like for her to look the same as she does in canon on the fantasy/witch side (as seen in her wiki). With less fancy clothes, of course.
AU HISTORY: Beatrice grew up as a daughter of a family that was well-known for both nobility and business. Although she was born as the future head’s first daughter, she is not the one who is selected as the next head. Instead, it is her twin brother who will be the future head, if only because she is not a girl. Although she is initially in disagreement that such things should be based on gender, she actually had no interest in living up to both rigid and strict expectations that her parents would force to raise her under. In fact, this is the common link between both her and her younger sister: neither of them have any interest in inheriting the family’s business or riches.
However, she still grew up inside of a vast mansion, an early curfew and still-strict schedule keeping her from exploring far too much outside of the mansion with the exception of school. This in itself was more than enough to give birth to what would be her rebellious nature and love of books and writing. Books oftentimes gave her something to do and another world to immerse herself into outside of the boring life she held.
During school, she sometimes found herself shunned or bullied from time to time because of her growing interest in fantasy and the occult. Kids would oftentimes find this odd, thus making it difficult for her to get along with children. This in itself is reason for her acting coldly towards others if they show an unkind sign to her upon first meeting her. Though, she did make some friends during her school years.
As she started middle school, she found herself going against her parent’s wishes more and more, oftentimes skipping school and coming home late. It was for this reason that her parents had her move to Recolle in hopes of “helping to shape her into a more upstanding adult.”
As she did grow up, she found herself forming friendships with the servants inside of the mansion. The older servants played with her, showing more of a motherly side to Beatrice than her own mother did. Instead, both her mother and father showed more love to her twin brother than they would show her. After all, her brother held both their hopes and dreams. She didn’t have a loveless or lonely life because of her siblings and the servants. In fact, it’s not far off to say that she sees the servants themselves as a family of sorts.
While she herself has no dreams in particular – it wouldn’t be far off to say that Beatrice has a growing interest in writing. She enjoys the fantasy genre the most, though finds both romance and mystery “entertaining” in their own right, as well. Her lack of dreams and goals is also part of the reason why she isn't part of any high school clubs. Rather, in her free time, she'll sometimes volunteer to help at the local library. It depends on her mood, however.
AU PERSONALITY: One change in her personality is her fondness for both books and reading. Considering the fact that the only other people she had to speak with were close family and servants with the exception of when other family came to visit – she found herself entertaining herself via books. As she describes, books are something she can use to step into worlds other than the ones she lives in. After all, she can immerse herself into stories about other people and histories that way. With this, it’s no wonder that she became a fan of the fantasy genre. It helped her to step away from the boring world that she lived in. Thus, she found herself gaining more of an interest in things like old superstitions, the occult, and witches. At the same time, she found herself somewhat interested in the mystery genre and trying to figure out a crime before it was revealed to the reader. With this, she oftentimes finds herself remembering old superstitions and reminding others of them. Although this is different than the witch persona that she herself ends up being in canon, she still maintains a strong believer in such things.
Though, it’s because of how imaginative she can be that she finds herself interested in writing herself. Immersing herself in any fantastical thoughts she has is yet another distraction from boredom.
Generally, Beato is a prankster. She enjoys playing pranks for the sake of amusement from how others will react. There’s not really any deep reason for it except for it being part of her somewhat mischievous and playful personality. In canon, it was partly because these pranks would be blamed on the witch, therefore causing for others to believe in her more.
She’s also rebellious. For example, upon becoming a high school student, she oftentimes finds herself skipping class in order to find something else she’s interested in. She’s not one to be interested in academic subjects such as English and Math, but more interested in finding entertainment for herself during the day.
In this AU, it’s… obvious to say that Beatrice isn’t interested or has a reason for murdering others. She’s not as hot headed or arrogant, and while still childish in a way – it’s definitely not as much as she was in canon. In canon, the witch persona didn’t communicate with other people as much as this Beato has in this AU – so the influence of those both from the mansion or from her schools is something that would help her be more mature.
She’s not as fickle as she was in canon, though she still has a habit of changing her mind from time to time and has trouble admitting when she needs help. In fact, she’s still someone who prefers to take on the burdens of her own problems instead of pushing them onto other people. That is, until she knows that problem is impossible for her to take care of. She has a habit of shrugging things off if it comes to that, but that’s ultimately a result of her also irresponsible personality.
She’s also someone who shows kindness more often than she did in canon. Though she’d still act coldly to those who are initially mean or cold themselves at first – Beato would have no reason to demand so much respect from others in this AU. With that said, she isn't manipulative towards others like she was in canon. Another difference lies in the fact that she has no reason to talk in the witch/riddle type talk. After all, she isn't a witch in this AU nor does she have a "witch personality" to maintain.
She finds herself close to her siblings. Although generally called strange by her younger sister, Beato seems to get along with both her younger sister and twin brother– oftentimes trying to offer advice or find ways to get them out of trouble if she finds them potentially being scolded or worse. When it comes to her twin brother, she can sometimes read him more well than others, or the two understanding what the other is thinking even without looking at the other. So in this AU, Beatrice is still a prankster, but she’s not one who plays pranks for malicious reasons or for the sake of being a witch.
While she did grow up being raised by someone who she can call her mother and father, she isn’t close to them by any means. The two of them demand quite a lot from all of their children due to the fact that she is part of such a high-class family – and Beato isn’t someone who would want to change who she was for someone like her parents, even in this AU. Even so, she does say she holds some gratitude for them for being the ones to raise her. She doesn’t hold any grudges against them for growing up somewhat isolated or for them holding high standards for her and her upbringing. She holds a rather neutral relationship with the rest of the family.
Her playful and confident personality has helped her to gain friends in the past, however some do see her fondness in the occult as odd. Not to mention, her taste in pranks isn’t something that others find tasteful or always funny. While she managed to make close friends in school, she’s also been shunned by others as a result. This may also be a reason as to why she’s started to pick up writing as a hobby.
However, she still grew up inside of a vast mansion, an early curfew and still-strict schedule keeping her from exploring far too much outside of the mansion with the exception of school. This in itself was more than enough to give birth to what would be her rebellious nature and love of books and writing.
